Before I give you any updates on how the work on our home is going, I think it’s important to see the starting point, meaning, I think it’s about time that you met my Grandmother’s kitchen. The kitchen that I grew up in, where I ate countless meals with my cousins, the room we ran through while playing tag, the room where until 2 months ago I would sit and catch up with my Grandmother. It is the room in this house that I cherish above all others, which made me realize that it was the first one we have to change. However much I may love the memories, while it continues to look like the Grandmother’s kitchen of my childhood it will never feel like “my” kitchen.
You might think that after we moved here I began looking up all sorts of photos and brainstorming ideas on how I wanted the kitchen to look, but the truth is that I already knew. The kitchen of my dreams is light and bright, with clean lines and perhaps a bit of a country/rustic feel. Of everything that I found on Pinterest & Houzz, these were my two favorite photos:
From Traditional Home.
From Fiorella Design
Using those photos as a starting point, it didn’t take long to come up with a to-do list for the remodel. In the end it came down to this: change absolutely everything. We’ll get into more detail on everything in future posts, but here is the basic game plan:
1) Replace tile counter top with light granite
2) Paint existing dark cabinets white
3) Replace appliances with new stainless steel
4) Cover over linoleum floor with dark hardwood (or something like it)
5) Replace back splash tile with white subway tile
6) Remove wallpaper and paint dark grey
I also have some “Wishlist” items that I could live without but really don’t want to:
1) Farmhouse sink
2) Gas cooktop
3) Built in kitchen booth
So there you have it. I’ll have more updates soon on how the work it going, but at least now there are some “before” pictures to reference once the transformation is over.
As always, thanks for reading. xoxo

May the force be with you — we’re in the middle of a kitchen remodel, too. Both of those kitchens above are beautiful and it looks like you get a lot of natural light; I’m sure you’ll have a gorgeous result. Good luck!
Oh, we have tile countertops too, and they are the worst things to try to clean. They will be the first thing to go in our kitchen remodel. Good call on replacing them.
Also, if you are feeling particularly masocistic, I recommeng painting the inside of the cabinets white too. It’s a pain in the ass, but on the otherhand it is a project you can do piecemeal, one cabinet at a time. I find it’s a great place to practice for one’s painting technique (no one sees the drips, etc) and makes you appriciate painting anythimg without shelves.
